This year's motorsport season starts with a big surprise for me as my British Touring Car Championship season request as a photographer has been approved and most importantly I have been asked by a BTCC team to photograph for them this year
This is Team BMR.
Team BMR was founded in 2013 by Warren Scott and two years later they won their first BTCC Teams' Championship with Volkswagen CC's. 2017 was a big year for them as young talent Ashley Sutton won the British Touring Car Championship title ahead of double BTCC champ Colin Turkington.
After Brands, where Ash won the Championship I have shared my pictures with him. The only thing I've asked for exchange was to be mentioned if the team needs a photographer for a race or for a whole season.
Why? Because, to work for a BTCC team was always a goal of mine to achieve. To work as a freelancer is great but you have to focus on the winners, their team and rush back to the Media Centre after podium presentation to upload the images for newspapers, magazines, etc.
To be honest I did forget this and normally this favor goes into a black whole and I never see anything to come back and help me, but not this time. Ash remembered and I've been asked by the team to work for them this 2018 BTCC season. Of course alongside Team BMR I will still provide images for ALAMY News who helped me to get into motorsport events since 2015.
So after a few years of hard work, I work for a BTCC team which was one of my main goal back in time when I started in 2015. I know, I know some of the guys managed this quicker then me, but I have some excuses which I work hard to get rid off. This contract doesn't mean I can quite my full time job and buy a Porsche to become a 'Porsche friend' with BTCC champ Jason Plato but gives me confidence and push me to be better than myself and previous BMR photographers.
As always the season starts with the Season Launch / Media Day at Donington Park where I met with my "boss" Maddy who was really welcoming and looking forward to working for her and the team. Before the big reveals we've managed to photograph this year's Adrian Flux Subaru Levorg before anyone, in a well lit environment.
Due to some email issues I couldn't collect my Season Pass at the Season Launch, so now I am waiting for the Postman to get it before Round 1 at Brands Hatch. But not everything as easy as it looks, because this year we will have to apply for additional accreditation to cover BTCC at MSV circuits, such as Brands Hatch (twice), Donington, Oulton Park and Snetterton.
Part from this little pain in the back the Season Launch was fantastic as always and really looking forward to cover the 60th BTCC Season for Team BMR and ALAMY News which will be challenging as I only bought portrait lenses for my Fuji X-T2!
In September 2017 when I changed camera system from Nikon to Fujifilm, the plan was to focus more on portrait, wedding and family photography - Gallery here - and if I need to cover a motorsport event, like I did the Goodwood Revival, I will hire lenses from Hire a Camera. So I only have portrait lenses, a Fujinon 23mm f/2 and a lens which if I can I will marry to, is the Fujinon 56mm f/1.2 which two were enough to cover last year's BTCC Championship decider, lol.
So, am I happy to back?
Of course I am! BTCC is always fun and challenging. I hope the weather will be nice during the season as few seasons ago we didn't have wet races at all. Yes, no rain in the UK during 10 weekends. Incredible!
See you at Brands Hatch on April 8th.
Why Hire a Camera? Huge selection of cameras from Compact to Medium formats, lenses for Canons, Micro 4/3, Sony, etc. and camera equipment such as tripods, microphones, stabilisers, etc. I did hire lots of equipment from them about 6 times and I can say they have never let me down. Some customer services could learn a lot from HC's as they are always kind, helpful and do their best to give you an excellent service when you hire from them.
